Lipid edema occurs mainly in women. It is often confused with being overweight, but the abnormal distribution of fat tissue and visible disproportions between the upper and lower body is a chronic condition that is very difficult to treat and is not caused by an unhealthy diet or lack of physical activity. It is assumed that the occurrence of lipedema may have a genetic basis or be related to hormonal imbalances. The swelling usually affects the lower limbs (symmetrically and evenly), less often the upper limbs, with lipedema typically not affecting the feet or hands. The swelling causes mental and physical discomfort. Patients affected by lipedema may have difficulty moving. The swelling is painful and the skin is sensitive and prone to bruising.

Diet for lipodema – what to keep in mind?
The treatment of lipodema mainly consists of reducing swelling and eliminating pain – pressotherapy (lymphatic drainage) is very helpful here. Thanks to special devices, patients can perform treatments at home whenever they feel the need. A proper diet is also important for people suffering from fatty edema. First of all, it is better to avoid highly processed foods, i.e., all fast food, unhealthy snacks, and sweet drinks. Weight loss diets will not help much with lipodema, but it is important to ensure that meals are well-balanced, provide the body with essential nutrients, and are rich in vitamins, macro- and microelements. Proper hydration is also an important factor. Water is the best choice, but unsweetened fruit and herbal teas are also acceptable.
